How to Handle an Anthropologist, Session 4

Recorded August 15, 1997

In 1997 Frank was contacted by Russell Shuttleworth, a then University of California, Berkeley, graduate student,  working on his Master’s Thesis, which was a research study to help understand how men with moderate to severe cerebral palsy experience and interpret their search for intimacy and sexual relationships in the face of significant social and cultural barriers or as Frank called it, "The Sexual Practices of Bay Area Men with Cerebral Palsy"!!! He wanted to interview Frank for this thesis. That interview quickly segued into 12 years of him interviewing Frank about Frank's life. Meanwhile, Frank encouraged Russell to live his dreams which resulted in Russell aka Dr. Gruve, djing a show on our LUVeR internet radio station for years and playing the harmonica in Frank's Cherotic All-Star Band for many years. They did 88 interviews in all, even continuing via Skype when Russell moved to Australia to teach there. Russell is now a Medical Anthropologist PhD and a member of the faculty at Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria Australia. We have the first twelve of these sessions on videotape. We are in the process of transcribing and editing all of the interviews into a book that Frank named "How to Handle an Anthropologist", http://www.eroplay.com/hthaa/.

Recorded in the early 1980's.

This video is an example of how a session can suddenly crack into deeper layers of different emotions, into tears, into questioning, all the while remaining incredibly erotic. Varda was a poet and a film maker who talked about her art with me and read some of her poems, all  the while wearing see-through costumes and other times nude.  But then she insisted that she was really shy and why was I so insensitive as to not  see that.  And that is when the video really gets interesting!

Reality Playings - November 20, 2009
experiments in experience/participation performance
Recorded at Temescal Art Center, Oakland, California

Again after last night’s performance I said we are doing our best performances in forty years. I don’t mean the past performances were inferior in any way. But last night there were a lot of elements to play with. The audience was eager to play, going outside the zones of dullish death-bed comfort. And they brought abilities and vulnerable willingness to jump in all the way. Of course having the core of the seven of us helps, providing willing bodies to undress, explore, and take on silly sexy adventures of liberating fun, created and led by audience members. But last night, this was amplified by the range and depth that the people brought. Of course there was Guillermo playing music, jamming with me, floating into juicy bits of debris of the beds of inspiration of brandy healing. But I always have musicians who drill to the core. What made it magical is when the shy woman who loves playing piano but thought she could not play started to play keyboard and got into it. And the woman Rain who came because she liked how on the flier Mikee mixed genitals all up. Her willingness to go into rituals and even to make them up on the spot and to lead others into these melted everything in to pure fun… Not to mention her lusty exploring the male bodies, which allowed me to touch on criticism of last month’s performance. Now there was just male nudity, for you who are keeping count. No female nudity, except when they kicked on their backs, legs wide apart high in the air, revealing holes of possibilities.

Then there was Blossom, the woman in white. She was a sexy female Harpo Marx with her chirping, beeping, giggling joyfully, moving her body swaying gently trying to project deep meaning physically. She was willing to dance small intimate with me and do a vocal duet with me, using a range from operatic to dirty growling noise.

The above are just some of the examples of the elements I had to play with last night. Of course I always find some elements to play with. And the first five minutes I thought I would have to drill for those elements. But after that, I just had to follow and not get in the way. For example, I had Blossom read my writings at random as I jammed with Guillermo and the piano player. Blossom ended up flipping back and forth between pieces, reading lines from different poems and essays, creating a new poetic pattern of images and thoughts. It reminded me of the technique William Burroughs used. It also reminded me of how I wrote the long poem that she was reading a lot from. In the early seventies there was a book, BE HERE NOW, by Ram Das. In the back of the book there were around sixty photographs on cards that you could pull out. So I had a shuffled pile of these cards beside my typewriter one day when I was tripping on acid. I wrote a section based upon each photo. Then I flip the top photo onto the floor and started writing the next photo. Blossom tapped into this streaming improvisation between the universal underground mind and the erotic physical bodies. And all the while Rain was leading her charges through their playful adventures around the space! This was one of the times during the night I thought this is mind-blowing mind-expanding! I couldn’t have created this! Just had to stay out of its way… Don’t block or limit it by holding on to pictures or expectations!

The Erotic Greeter

Recorded April 4, 2011 on on Hopkins Street, Berkeley, California as part of Maggie Lawson’s “Small Pieces of Your Truth”.

Here is what Frank wrote about this piece:
Just got back from doing my part of Maggie Lawson’s performance, small pieces of your truth [see below for her directions]. I picked the option PUBLIC GIFT. The free service of my part was being available to be touched and physically explored as THE EROTIC GREETER. I had a sign to that effect as I sat outside the shops on Hopkins Street for about ninety minutes. It was a great day to be sitting outside! I don’t know if I used any skills from my Master degrees in psychology and in performance /video [I don’t believe I got any skills from those days]. I did similar performances long before grad school! Anyway, I sat in the shade and engaged with people as they passed by as Linda about ten yards away documented it with photos and video. Most people just passed me, working hard on NOT looking at me. Of course little kids looked and pointed. Some people said “hi, Frank,” knowing me from my Berkeley community public access cable show. And one of my favorite singers, Shelley Doty, with her son stopped to talk. And a guy pulled up and got out of his car to talk. He said a few weeks ago he was building a fence for a guy and the guy told him about me. So he wanted to meet me. So…! A fun day!

Frank Moore For President 2008 Platforms - raw footage

Recorded June 15, 2007. This is the raw footage from the taping session.

Ah, yes! I did spend two years running for president as a write-in candidate! It is one of my most effective performances! It inspired a lot of people, forced changes in laws in several states, attracted a lot of mainstream European press coverage, and gave me a platform on which to address issues. SEE, I AM NOT JUST A HUNK!

This video explores what happens when people of all types and ages are given a chance to return to being a kid again. A simple game of dress-up becomes a powerful metaphor for dropping taboos, releasing creative emotion, and for dramatic change. As a result, an innocent eroticism is found ... as well as getting intimate with 60 humans.

I edited EROTIC PLAY with two remotes taped on a table before me using my head pointer. What we do when we have no money and when we are ahead of the technology! We just made videos and put them in our closet. And now the same videos are being watched by people all over the world on THE FRANK MOORE CHANNEL [even on their television]! Thank God we didn't care whether people would ever see the stuff. We just did them to do them! And now we have a shit load of content!

Originally we had planned to do a documentary about Frank's life and work because we have so much footage and so many photographs. But we did not want to do a "normal" talking head style documentary. We realized that Frank had already written a biography of sorts in his book, "Art of a Shaman" so we decided to try to use that as the "script" for the video. We decided to see if we could get people who were important to Frank and had played a part in his life to each read a chapter of the book. After drafting the email and sending it out we were blown away at the immediate response and the project took off. We assigned chapters to readers using the random principle ... as Frank loved to do ... pulling a piece of paper with a chapter number written on it from a bag as we read a person's name.

Once we had all of the recordings of the readings and added up the time, the documentary was going to be at least 3 hours long ... and it was going to take a really long time to put together. We then had a eureka on a walk one day.... we could put each chapter out on the web as we create them ... as episodes!

Several musicians are now creating "background music" for each episode.

Way back at the beginning, when we first had the thought of even doing a documentary about Frank, we asked Vinnie Spit Santino if he would write a song for it, without any idea how we would use it ... or what we were even doing with the documentary. Vinnie wrote the amazing "Let Me Be Frank" that will be the opening song for each episode ... and the title of the series!

Frank Moore’s Vimeo account was terminated!

On Wednesday August 21, 2019, Vimeo abruptly terminated Frank's account for violating their “guidelines”.

Frank had over 700 videos in his account that we have been uploading on a weekly basis for over eight years. His videos had over 33 million plays on Vimeo.com.

It will take us a while to get them all back up at a new place ... but they will slowly start appearing here again as we upload them to their new home!

A performance by Frank Moore
Saturday, December 4, 2004
Wildcat Studio, Berkeley, CA

Frank Moore wrote on Monday, December 06, 2004

Well, Saturday night’s performance, Dancing In The Passion Cave at the WILDCAT STUDIO was extremely simple…I wasn’t even nude! But it was extremely powerful. The obvious dance was the naked dance between Linda and Erika explicitly expressing the intimate relationship that we are together. The question, are they making love?, was whispered quite a few times during the 3 hours of pleasure being together in a relaxed slowness. Meanwhile I was sitting/talking with Sarah who came to the performance “to find happiness.” Dr. Oblivious and Geoff jammed masterfully living music, playing off of both the dance and what was happening with Sarah and me, melting everything together. The third element of the ritual was the twin black brothers [fans of my B-TV shows] buzzing around the space in their wheelchairs…very cute!

We didn’t even have time to shut the overhead lights off before the magical trance kicked in. I just pulled Sarah from the audience and off we went! Right off the bat she said she doesn’t let ANYONE ever take photos of her…but she would let us video her at the performance. She said she doesn’t like to touch [except her dogs], didn’t have sex/make love, wears layers of clothing ALWAYS  to protect herself from the outside, to make sure she doesn’t lose her self to AN OTHER. Very quickly she and I were holding hands and rubbing NUDE ARMS together!...without her losing her self! Soon I was rubbing her padded bra [I have been running into a lot of them recently!]. By the end of the night she was banging on her bra with a drumstick [inspired by Jen Wilson’s CONGA CUNT], pounding my poems [which she read aloud] into her body! At the end of the night, she said she had found happiness. Guess that performance was a success! And what a way to end a year!

Raw footage of Frank Moore's Cherotic All-Star Band at Burnt Ramen, Richmond, California for the public access series "Going Deep To The Core At Ramen with Frank Moore".

Frank wrote this about the jam:

To start the jam, Dr. Gruve on harmonica, John the Baker on the roto-toms, and I doing vocals set down the concrete for the jam for a few minutes. Then The Sweet Nothings charged the stage (hey, I’m still playing with 20-year-olds!) … as Linda, Erika, and I started singing together … nude skin rubbing me between them warm friction turn-on arousing as the Ramen dwellers Jaren and Sierra drummed arousal into reality. It didn’t let up for an hour.

How to Handle an Anthropologist BOOK PROMO

HOW TO HANDLE AN ANTHROPOLOGIST
Russell Shuttleworth, PhD interviews shaman/performance artist Frank Moore

In 1997, shaman/performance artist Frank Moore was contacted by Russell Shuttleworth, a then University of California, Berkeley graduate student, working on his doctoral dissertation. The thesis was a research study to help understand how men with moderate to severe cerebral palsy experience and interpret their search for intimacy and sexual relationships in the face of significant social and cultural barriers, or as Frank called it, “The Sexual Practices of Bay Area Men with Cerebral Palsy.” He wanted to interview Frank for this thesis. That interview quickly segued into 12 years of Russell interviewing Frank about Frank's life. Meanwhile, Frank encouraged Russell to live his dreams, which resulted in the discovery of Russell’s alter-ego Dr. Gruve, who dj'd a show on Frank’s LUVeR internet radio station, and played the harmonica in Frank's Cherotic All-Star Band. They did 88 interviews in all, even continuing via Skype when Russell moved to Australia to teach there. Russell is now a Medical Anthropologist PhD and a member of the faculty at Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria Australia.

Inside this book are the full transcripts of these interviews.

Recorded at Cyclecide Warehouse, San Francisco, California.

The whole night was magical.  But things really started calling Bob back from wherever he now is when Annie narrated slides [mostly of naked Bob].  And then the FLUFF GRRL remaining members with the ashes of Bob blew everybody away.

In our tradition, FLUFF GRRL members joined my CHEROTIC ALL-STAR BAND with a lot of other CHEROTIC vets for a huge jam which was the deepest, the most powerful CHEROTIC jam ever.  To start I sang DANNY BOY and BOBBY’S GIRL [of course I was nude] to Bob.  And then the musicians piled onto the stage and spilled off in front of the stage.  Nude Linda and Erika joined me and things got hot and explicit, and Annie helped Bob suck my cock throughout the jam!  Actually I saw Bob at different points of the jam.  Actually I had two shifts of hot babes singing with me [and Peppe].  At one point the jam seemed to be winding down.  So Linda and Erika got off the stage to get me down.  But the band didn’t want to stop [after all it might be the last time!]!  So Annie and Stacy sang with me [kept kissing me!].  We segued into some of Bob’s favorite songs.  Like always, the jam lasted until most of the audience had left!  I think Bob was impressed that we cleared a room one more time!

Well, this was one of those damn hard ones to do! It was at the end of a night of extreme performances which were loud, dangerous, full of explosives, glamour, and macho risking in an upscale gallery in Davis, California. Although there was human shit [literally] and broken glass on the floor by the time I went on, the night had really been lame, tame and hollow. Both the energy and the audience were diffused by the time I went on. So I had my nude women bring the audience members [even from the balcony] to me to touch. This was what freaked the gallery owner out! But most of the audience members liked it. Some even cried!

Frank Moore's Cherotic All-Star Band, Fat City, San Francisco, California.

We were the finale of the  long, great night of the After St. Stupid Day Bash at Fat City in S.F. put on by Bob and Ann Madigan…cram packed with great, loud, surreal, over-the-edge bands. In fact it was so long that I lost a quarter of my band before we went on as the finale of the show at 1:15am! But The Cherotic All-Star Band was huge anyway. After my traditional vocal solo, Lenny Lauro of The Year of the Wildcat with his bass dug the groove deeper and deeper. Rich Polysorbate, the drummer of L.A.’s Clowns & Fetuses, stirred the tribal heart. Mike Fluffgrrl’s slide guitarist, Barney Fluffgrrl’s Theremin wizard, and the trombonist from Los Banos created musical/emotional water slides into fuzzy altered states as Bob Madigan and Michael Peppe tickled the keys, joyfully grinning. Lena Strayhorn played various unique instruments, arousing sexy giggling thoughts. The E-Salon’s own Kay played with musical toys. I crashed the chimes when I wasn’t rubbing/dancing naked intimate sex into the jamming with Linda and Erika…when they weren’t tickling each other all-the-way into silliness or “getting” the band. All through the jam Linda, Erika, Lena, Bob, Peppe, Caroline of The Year of the Wildcat joined me in a pagan non-verbal vocal chorus that ripped holes in “reality” into soft molten pleasure chaos of enjoying being one another within one another. And all of this…and in fact the whole show of the long night…was pumped full of juice by Ann Madigan standing in front of the stage very actively enjoying. This greased all the wheels!

Frank Moore's Cherotic All-Star Band
Burnt Ramen, Richmond, CA

ON-STAGE CAMERA: https://archive.org/details/nightoftaboopassions-2006-onstage

Well, Friday’s gig at burnt ramen was coming home. I have said ramen is my favorite place to play music at. Full-volume, no frills, pure underground! We have played there a lot! We sat around waiting for the bands and an audience to appear … talking to John the Baker (the guiding spirit of Ramen) and Steve. Steve and I go back 40 years! He and I had a long visit the night before. We hadn’t seen each other in 35 years! He was a major player in my life … the first person who dared to give me LSD in college, drove me from San Bernardino to hippiedom Santa Fe, dropping me off at a Digger-style commune. When he, a few months later, followed my wheel tracks and moved to Santa Fe, we lived together in an extended family … etc. He drove from Santa Barbara to play his stand-up bass in the jam…and spent his day buying a new effects box for the gig.

As we sat there, John started telling us that A LOT of the punks who come to ramen have told him they are fans of my shows on B-TV … watching episodes multiple times! I had known we have a large black audience, judging from the reaction on the street when I go downtown. But it is good to know that we are corrupting … er … I mean educating … the YOUTH! At the end of the night, John proposed I do a show at ramen once a month with local bands (and of course Cherotic All-Star jams!) to get ramen bands on B-TV. The title could possibly be Going to the Core @ Ramen with Frank Moore. We talked about starting shooting it in July. Funny how things keep opening up. It’s also funny that I’ve been connected to the punk scene for 30 years.

As people came in, we gave each person a complete library of the Sons of Skip Skiffington and the Tortured cds. We also played them between sets. The guy who is behind both bands is always creating new cds and is always sending us many copies of each to give away. It would be scary if the dude wasn’t so good! We gave him his own LUVeR show just to use all of his hit material! He ain’t no fool! But we either have to build another house to store his cds, or do more live gigs just to give away his cds … or rent a plane to drop Skip Skiffington’s shit over Berkeley!

The audience was invisible! It looked like nobody was there. But we about broke even … which is quite good for a LUVeR benefit. Nobody minded not seeing the audience. We overheard John telling some people I was to blame for him starting to book bands and for ramen! I get blamed for everything! John was the first act we saw at W.E.Fest in Wilmington, N.C. in 98. He was a solo act from Woodstock. He blew us away! We spent hours talking to him on the sidewalk after the show the first night of the festival. But when we got home, there was an e-mail from him confessing he didn’t come to my 2 sets at the festivals … just sat outside … because he was scared! So when he came to San Francisco with his band, The Banned, he had me double billed with them…in fact, I sang in his band, and they joined my All-Stars. He said that show opened up possibilities for him. So he stayed here…wormed his way into a recording studio in an old produce warehouse…first to live, but quickly built a funky theater for hard core bands. The rest is history! I get blamed for everything … including history!

But enough history! Back to the gig! The night looked like one band that kept expanding, evolving, getting more and more “out there” as the night went on. Unfortunately The Urban Monks had a divorce before the show. So the first band was The Shenanigoats, a great, fun, four-piece punky band from Sacramento. With them you were pretty sure where you were at. But when Instagon came to bat, the magical weirdness began! The thing about them is they are NEVER the same web of players! This time it was Lob (my musical director for decades!) on bass, Dr. Oblivious (my other musical director) on keyboard, Lena the Jaw Harp Queen playing everything but the jaw harp, Chris on the banjo (and maybe guitar), and The Shenanigoats’ drummer (Skott) and guitarist (Jim). They had the familiar structure of songs, tunes, numbers … they did a trippy Inagadadavita. But you found yourself floating down the Mississippi on a strawberry and chocolate marshmallow raft!

The Cherotic All-Star Band:
Lob
Dr. Oblivious
Lena Strayhorn
Chris Miller
Steve Emanuel
Tomek Von Schachtmayer
Skott DeMEDERIOS (drummer Shenanigoats)
Jim Willig (guitarist Shenanigoats)
Erika Shaver-Nelson

This answers the age-old question of how many nude erotically rubbing bodies, musicians playing their instruments, cameras, and audience members can you fit into a small space. This was for the premier of an underground film at a San Francisco jazz club.

Cultural Subversion Recording Session

Recorded August 29, 1997.

A multimedia essay by well-known Berkeley performance artist/ provocateur Frank Moore. In this piece, Mr. Moore contemplates the allegedly liberating nature of new media: ". . . it is important to realize at the beginning that personal technology, anarchistic technology is still technology. All technology has hidden, built-in links to the established order of isolation and fragmentation. These links can frustrate attempts to use technology to subvert the established reality." Reading by Linda Mac, music by Frank Moore and K.Atchley.

You can also download the video here (mp4, 2.4 GB):
https://archive.org/download/artofashamanpart01/Art-of-a-Shaman-PART-01.mp4

A new video presentation of Frank Moore’s book using photos, film and video footage from Frank’s life and performances. In “Art of a Shaman”, originally delivered as a lecture at New York University in 1990 as part of the conference, “New Pathways in Performance”, Frank Moore explores performance and art in general terms of them being a magical way to effect change in the world. He looks at performance as an art of melting action, ritualistic shamanistic doings/playings. By using his career and life as a "baseline", Moore explains the dynamic playing within the context of reality shaping. He brings in concepts from modern physics, mythology and psychology.
