Recorded March 14, 1986 at The Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco, California

This is the Wrapping/Rocking ritual toward the beginnings of it's life. We called this performance at The Intersection "The Ritual Cave".

Frank's description:
The Ritual Cave is a throw-back to a time long long ago when art was not just to view, when art was a magical release into a realm of all possibilities beyond time and limitation. Come into THE RITUAL CAVE and be pulled into the cozy semi-darkness of childhood dreams.

From their event calendar:

PERFORMANCE INSTALLMENTS
March 4 & 15

Frank Moore presents THE RITUAL CAVE, an exploration of childhood dreams and a time when art provided a realm of endless possibilities. Congenitally disabled and wheelchair-bound by cerebral palsy, performance artist Moore creates unorthodox works that evoke child-like playfulness and freedom from the emotions of isolation and fear.

A performance by Frank Moore
With Mary Esch & Linda Mac.

How To Handle An Anthropologist, Session 5

Recorded September 22, 1997

In 1997 Frank was contacted by Russell Shuttleworth, a then University of California, Berkeley, graduate student,  working on his Master’s Thesis, which was a research study to help understand how men with moderate to severe cerebral palsy experience and interpret their search for intimacy and sexual relationships in the face of significant social and cultural barriers or as Frank called it, "The Sexual Practices of Bay Area Men with Cerebral Palsy"!!! He wanted to interview Frank for this thesis. That interview quickly segued into 12 years of him interviewing Frank about Frank's life. Meanwhile, Frank encouraged Russell to live his dreams which resulted in Russell aka Dr. Gruve, djing a show on our LUVeR internet radio station for years and playing the harmonica in Frank's Cherotic All-Star Band for many years. They did 88 interviews in all, even continuing via Skype when Russell moved to Australia to teach there. Russell is now a Medical Anthropologist PhD and a member of the faculty at Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria Australia. We have the first twelve of these sessions on videotape. We are in the process of transcribing and editing all of the interviews into a book that Frank named "How to Handle an Anthropologist", http://www.eroplay.com/hthaa/.

Recorded July 24, 2004
Wild Cat Studio, Berkeley, California

Well, last night’s performance is the kind of thing where I don’t think much happened, but years later, somebody will come up to us and say that night changed his life.

Oh sure, there was an audience…which covered the studio rental…which means we can do another one there.  Sure, there was great live music by Dr. O., Keith, and a great guitarist…to which Erika, Kirsten, Linda and I nude skin explicitly, intimately danced together. Sure, living sculptures were created by and with audience members. But I had to struggle hard to get there! It was a night of “no’s”…even to simple requests. They were there wanting magic to happen. But they weren’t willing to invest themselves to make magic happen. For example…after an easy time getting someone to undress Linda…I had to pull teeth for about an hour to get people to undress the willing Kirsten and Erika! Figure that one out!

Recorded at 8th Street Studio, Berkeley, California, September 13, 2008

This was the climax of my two year presidential campaign.

A performance can be built on a good title…like THE EROTIC CAMPAIGN…FEEL, TOUCH THE POSSIBILITIES. The title creates a bubble of expectations that set off reactions which build a reality. The excuse for this performance was the U.K. Eurotrash TV show SEXARAMA…the title tells it all…wanted to do a piece on the campaign. I grabbed onto this excuse to do a 3-hour inter-active ritual. For the last few years I have been only doing band gigs. I knew probably the TV people would boil the hours of magic down to 5 minutes of sleazy fluff. But I am willing to risk! The difference between a band gig and an inter-active ritual is the band gig has fairly defined frames. But in an inter-active ritual I don’t know what will happen from one minute to the next. I do enter the performance with pictures. But it always becomes quickly obvious those pictures ain’t what is going to happen….so dive in and float!

Everything clicked. Great band full of my long-time Cherotic vets…a great space…an audience ready to combine politics, erotics, music, and personal magic.  I had to just not block it!

An excerpt from Frank Moore’s The Uncomfortable Zones Of Fun
Recorded Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, California

Below is what I wrote after this performance:

Ah!  How do you measure success in a performance?  Maybe when the audience [the people who come to the performance] start crying uncontrollably over releases of blocks that just disappeared just by walking through them with willingness and trust.  Or maybe when a young sexy co-ed rocks nude on your lap, arousing all kinds of new possibilities.  Or maybe when you attract a wide range of people, all ready to go all the way into the volcano, melting into a cozy little joyful community, willing to be uncomfortable and whatever else it takes to go into adventures of fun, floating on the mood music of Kene-J and a psychology grad student… The community so strong that they [most of them] kept staying, playing together, long after the “performance” was “over”, and then most of them went to an apartment of one of them to continue hanging out together!  And I’m not even getting into what they said of how the performance effected them! [See the full write-up at the link below for that!] I am just glad I didn’t get in the way of the potential of the night!

Yep!  It was a great deep success! And the series is clearly building, tapping into the young art school student community, among other groups. Ah, yes, very dangerous and subversive! You need to do something for at least a year to start this kind of building. And it goes in waves. The art student came months ago. She went home all shining and open and vulnerable and creative. Her roommates and friends saw the changes in her. So when they came, they were ready to go into it explicitly. This audience was the most explicitly ready in over a year!
