How to Handle an Anthropologist BOOK PROMO
HOW TO HANDLE AN ANTHROPOLOGIST
Russell Shuttleworth, PhD interviews shaman/performance artist Frank Moore
In 1997, shaman/performance artist Frank Moore was contacted by Russell Shuttleworth, a then University of California, Berkeley graduate student, working on his doctoral dissertation. The thesis was a research study to help understand how men with moderate to severe cerebral palsy experience and interpret their search for intimacy and sexual relationships in the face of significant social and cultural barriers, or as Frank called it, “The Sexual Practices of Bay Area Men with Cerebral Palsy.” He wanted to interview Frank for this thesis. That interview quickly segued into 12 years of Russell interviewing Frank about Frank's life. Meanwhile, Frank encouraged Russell to live his dreams, which resulted in the discovery of Russell’s alter-ego Dr. Gruve, who dj'd a show on Frank’s LUVeR internet radio station, and played the harmonica in Frank's Cherotic All-Star Band. They did 88 interviews in all, even continuing via Skype when Russell moved to Australia to teach there. Russell is now a Medical Anthropologist PhD and a member of the faculty at Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria Australia.
Inside this book are the full transcripts of these interviews.

Recorded at Cyclecide Warehouse, San Francisco, California.
The whole night was magical. But things really started calling Bob back from wherever he now is when Annie narrated slides [mostly of naked Bob]. And then the FLUFF GRRL remaining members with the ashes of Bob blew everybody away.
In our tradition, FLUFF GRRL members joined my CHEROTIC ALL-STAR BAND with a lot of other CHEROTIC vets for a huge jam which was the deepest, the most powerful CHEROTIC jam ever. To start I sang DANNY BOY and BOBBY’S GIRL [of course I was nude] to Bob. And then the musicians piled onto the stage and spilled off in front of the stage. Nude Linda and Erika joined me and things got hot and explicit, and Annie helped Bob suck my cock throughout the jam! Actually I saw Bob at different points of the jam. Actually I had two shifts of hot babes singing with me [and Peppe]. At one point the jam seemed to be winding down. So Linda and Erika got off the stage to get me down. But the band didn’t want to stop [after all it might be the last time!]! So Annie and Stacy sang with me [kept kissing me!]. We segued into some of Bob’s favorite songs. Like always, the jam lasted until most of the audience had left! I think Bob was impressed that we cleared a room one more time!

Well, this was one of those damn hard ones to do! It was at the end of a night of extreme performances which were loud, dangerous, full of explosives, glamour, and macho risking in an upscale gallery in Davis, California. Although there was human shit [literally] and broken glass on the floor by the time I went on, the night had really been lame, tame and hollow. Both the energy and the audience were diffused by the time I went on. So I had my nude women bring the audience members [even from the balcony] to me to touch. This was what freaked the gallery owner out! But most of the audience members liked it. Some even cried!

Frank Moore's Cherotic All-Star Band, Fat City, San Francisco, California.
We were the finale of the long, great night of the After St. Stupid Day Bash at Fat City in S.F. put on by Bob and Ann Madigan…cram packed with great, loud, surreal, over-the-edge bands. In fact it was so long that I lost a quarter of my band before we went on as the finale of the show at 1:15am! But The Cherotic All-Star Band was huge anyway. After my traditional vocal solo, Lenny Lauro of The Year of the Wildcat with his bass dug the groove deeper and deeper. Rich Polysorbate, the drummer of L.A.’s Clowns & Fetuses, stirred the tribal heart. Mike Fluffgrrl’s slide guitarist, Barney Fluffgrrl’s Theremin wizard, and the trombonist from Los Banos created musical/emotional water slides into fuzzy altered states as Bob Madigan and Michael Peppe tickled the keys, joyfully grinning. Lena Strayhorn played various unique instruments, arousing sexy giggling thoughts. The E-Salon’s own Kay played with musical toys. I crashed the chimes when I wasn’t rubbing/dancing naked intimate sex into the jamming with Linda and Erika…when they weren’t tickling each other all-the-way into silliness or “getting” the band. All through the jam Linda, Erika, Lena, Bob, Peppe, Caroline of The Year of the Wildcat joined me in a pagan non-verbal vocal chorus that ripped holes in “reality” into soft molten pleasure chaos of enjoying being one another within one another. And all of this…and in fact the whole show of the long night…was pumped full of juice by Ann Madigan standing in front of the stage very actively enjoying. This greased all the wheels!
